What is CERN/Why are we going?

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN, operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954, the intergovernmental organisation is based just outside of Geneva, on the France-Switzerland border. At CERN, scientists from around the world use unique equipment to explore the inner workings of the Universe, ‘pushing the limits of technology for the benefit of society’. To date, three Nobel Prizes in Physics are directly contributed to work conducted at CERN:

  • 1984 – Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer
  • 1992 – Georges Charpak
  • 2013 – Francois Englert and Peter Higgs

We have Conni!

Conni is SSAGO’s former International Officer who now works at CERN assisting on some of this cutting-edge research!  She reached out and invited SSAGO to come and visit the installations and learn more about the wide range of experiments conducted. How could we refuse? You don’t need to be studying physics, or science at all for that matter, to attend this trip! If you’re interested in the work on going to understand how the universe works in the way that it does, this is the trip for you!
